Meet Kathy

Refugee Employee Assistance Program (REAP) Coordinator

Kathy has a deep love and passion for education, both as a student and a teacher.

She believes that education is a cornerstone of understanding and empathy, and that learning is a constant journey, not a destination to be reached. As the instructor of our English Language Learning classes, Kathy is beloved by her students for her kindness, thoughtfulness, and unwavering dedication to helping others succeed and grow.

What’s a fun or interesting fact about you that most people wouldn’t guess?

“Not only have I attended school in every decade since the 70s, I have completed a printing apprenticeship. I can run a letterpress, a darkroom, a 4-color process, and just about everything in between. I really enjoyed the work, which takes a surprising amount of mental flexibility. Had technology not changed so rapidly in the late nineties into the aughts, I would probably be doing it still.”

What’s a book, movie, or song that inspires you and why?

“I have always been a reader, so that depends on what day it is. These days it’s “Home” which is a poem by Warsan Shire. ‘No one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land’ just breaks me.”

If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and how would you use it?

“I don’t believe in instantly mastering anything because I think cognition is a journey, not a destination. If it comes too easily, I don’t think it’s valued as much.”

When faced with hard times, what was the best advice you received or the biggest lessons you learned?

“Best advice: Marry the right person – 100%. And, as a corollary, don’t be too stupid to apologize or to thank people in your life.”
