What’s a fun or interesting fact about you that most people wouldn’t guess?

“I was born in Sudan’s Darfur region. The place is a very beautiful town. In 2023 it was all destroyed due to genocide. I graduated from high school. When I was 10 years old, I smoked…I had an uncle who smoked. We didn’t have lighters, but had charcoal and put it there. My brother saw me. I got beat up for that.”

What’s a book, movie, or song that inspires you and why?

“”The Middle of Everywhere’ by Mary Pipher. SCC told me about this book. She’s a local writer. It’s all about refugees after 9/11. After I read that book, a few years later, the writer came to Center for People. I met her at the front desk.”

If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and how would you use it?

“I would definitely finish my IT degree and I would love to finish a Master’s degree. I only did an associate’s degree. I want to pursue that and work in the cyber security field.”

When faced with hard times, what was the best advice you received or the biggest lessons you learned?

“I always assume the best: even when I know there’s something wrong. If something bad happens, something good happens also. Let’s not always think on the negative side. Things happen for a reason. It took me patience to realize that. It took me a long time… I’m a patient person. Be patient and don’t give up. Be ambitious, too. A lot of things happen in life, but it’s a mix. If it doesn’t break you, it makes you stronger. Tomorrow will be better.

A lesson I learned is whatever deed you do, you get the same thing back. Karma – get it all back. If something is not satisfying for me, I don’t like it, I won’t do it. If something makes you happy, do it. Try to stay positive. Before you do something, make sure that what you do is good. Whatever you do is yours, forever. It comes back.”
