Meet Daniel

Community Support Specialist

Daniel wears many hats here at Center for People, from teaching classes, to assisting volunteers, working on fund development, and even supporting the front desk.

Known for his empathy and cheerfulness, Daniel thrives on meaningful conversations and making connections with everyone he meets. He is an avid fan of pop culture. Daniel’s passions range from horror movies and comic books to the music of Michael Jackson and the historical intrigue of the Titanic. He also has a wide range of pop culture shirts that bring a touch of fun to the workplace every day.

What’s a fun or interesting fact about you that most people wouldn’t guess?

“I was born in Puerto Rico (in the capital city of San Juan) which, contrary to what a lot of people think, is a part of the United States. I grew up in New York City which was the happiest period of my life. I studied psychology and counseling in school which I was inspired to do by my grandmother (who used to be a social worker) and mother (who used to be a nurse). I never actually applied for my first official job which was working as field worker for a mental health and substance abuse services center in Puerto Rico.

I love to sing along to my favorite 80’s music while I’m driving.”

What’s a book, movie, or song that inspires you and why?

“A movie that inspires me is Forrest Gump because the main character, despite having some cognitive limitations, became a part of history and had a major positive impact in the lives of those around him by simply being himself and living in the moment. A book that inspires me is Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher because of the author’s ability to take the unfortunate circumstances of her life and make them into humorous and uplifting anecdotes.

A song that inspires me is “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson because of its simple but powerful message which is that in order to make the world a better place, it must start with each of us being willing to look within and change ourselves for the better.”

If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and how would you use it?

“I would love to be an expert at building models since it combines my love for collecting with my love for arts and crafts and creative expression. I would use this skill to build a high-end model of the RMS Titanic, with functioning lights and motors, since I am a huge enthusiast of that subject.”

When faced with hard times, what was the best advice you received or the biggest lessons you learned?

“When I’ve gone through difficult times, the unconditional love and support from my late grandmother, mother, and sister helped me stay strong and hopeful. The best advice I’ve ever received is to focus on knowing yourself and what you ultimately want to achieve and not focus on other people’s expectations, reactions, or opinions of you.

The biggest lessons I’ve learned through these experiences is to (1) lean into the discomfort since that is how you grow, (2) understand that the storm will eventually pass, and (3) don’t sweat the small stuff.”
